GM, My 17 year old a/c broke down this week, and decided not to fix but replace wit more efficient unit. I asked (urged) my contractor to get me a 5 ton unit with variable speed of seer 16. he is almost done with installation, but from what I see it looks like a single stage. Units are

You are absolutely correct from what those model numbers cross to. the blower IS variable speed, but if you were looking for a two stage compressor, you don't have it. Did you sign a contract with the contractor? You do have a seer rating of 16.
