You are trying to light pilot, correct?

Turn the round knob on top of the gas valve to "pilot", push down red button and hold down., and at the same time stick a long match in by pilot hood and wait until pilot lights. Continue holding down the red button for about 45 seconds, release and see if pilot stays lit. Then, if it does, turn round knob to on.
