I have a hotpoint gas water heater with a unitrol gas valve.

Customer Question

I have a hotpoint gas water heater with a unitrol gas valve. The pilot will light if I wait after I turn it off, but as soon as I try to turn the temperature dial to warm, the gas burner will light but only for about 3 seconds; then it simply goes out.

Ok, the possibilities are a faulty gas control valve (a warranty item for a 3 yer old unit), a tripped overtemp device under the burner or in the pilot assembly (probably not a warranty item).

Is the thermocoupler a possibility?
Expert:  Rick replied 1 year ago.

If the pilot stays lit when you release the button you hold down to light it then the thermocouple is working fine.
