We have a GE Model Number GE30TO6AA6, Serial Number

Customer Question

We have a GE Model Number GE30TO6AA6, Serial Number GE0108B14008.l We drained it and my husband scraped and cleaned the anode. We now have a foul odor coming out of the hot water faucets. Should we replace the anode or simply buy a new water heater? In the meantime we installed a filtration system because we had the water tested after the well pump went bad and found coliform in the water. Can you assist?

The odor is usually caused by a reaction between a harmless bacteria in the water and the stock anode rod in the tank. Your best bet it to replace the stock magnesium rod with an aluminum/zinc rod and dump a gallon of bleach into the tank while the rod is out. Then refill the tank and let it sit for a half hour then drain the tank and refill it. This should solve the odor problem coming from the tank.
