Allhvac : Good evening, i need some more infomation,
Allhvac : is your indoor fan runnning?
Customer :

yes

Allhvac : You said that the outdoor unit is running, can you tell if the compressor is running?
Allhvac : The thermostat is working ok as long as you set the unit to cool and both the outdoor unit is running and the indoor is running
Allhvac : Have you seen ice on the suction line while the compressor is running(suction line is the larger copper tubing on the coil, or by the compressor)
Customer :

we can hear the outside machine operating and see the fan turning

Allhvac : when you put your hand over the condensing unit do you feel hot air coming out of it
Allhvac : Well there are two things that might be going on, !. the system compressor is running ok, but its low on refrigerant, or the Dual running capacitor is bad for the compressor so the fan is running but the compressor is off
Customer :

not hot air

Allhvac : or the compressor is bad
Allhvac : the running capacitor might be bad
Allhvac : can you open the outdoor unit?
Allhvac : Be carefull there is high voltage on the outdoor unit 240Volts
Customer :

I can open it by removing a few screws. Should we we hire a tec to come to our house?

Allhvac : Yes I would highly recommend it
Allhvac : It will end up bieng one of these issues, Low refrigerant(R22 or R410A), bad dual running capacitor
Allhvac : or bad compressor terminals
Allhvac : as long as the compressor is good, running capacitor is an easy fix
Customer :

ok Thanks we will hire someone to come to the house.

Allhvac : is there anything else i can help you with tonight?
Customer :

no thank you

Allhvac : thank you
