I would like to know whether this is a far estimate for replacement

Customer Question

I would like to know whether this is a far estimate for replacement of a furnace and Air Conditioner unit, 2 zones:

310AAV042090 Bryant 90,000 BTU 80+ AFUE gas fired furnace
CNPVP03617 Bryant 36,000 BTU 14+ SEER a/c coil
116ANA03600 Bryant 36,000 BTU 14+ SEER a/c condenser
V6000 Honeywell digital programmable thermostat
A600 Aprilaire whole house humidifier

The cost quoted for intallation of this equipment for 2 zones, plus ductwork etc. is $13,300.

In addition, the technician is offering an upgrade to 16+ SEER a/c system with a 83% AFUE gas furnace and a two stage variable speed blower for and additional $1050 per unit or an upgrade to 93% AFUE gas furnace and 16 SEER a/c for $2050 per unit.

I live in the northeastern United States. Is this a fair estimate and do I need to upgrade and, if so, to which system? Thank you.

Hello and thank you for using this service,

That estimate is high for all of it. The additional $2050 for the upgraded AC and $1050 for the Furnace would be the cost of the equipment, so that would be 13,300 for the work thermostat, humidifier, and zones?? Not for Bryant.

Get another estimate. With all the upgraded AC and Furnace that should run around 8000-9500tops depending on how much duct work is required. With the low efficient AC and Furnace it should be 7000-8000, in that range.

Now unless they are doing complete new duct work for the house then that would be a different story. If they are just redoing the plenum and minor duct work as is needed with a new furnace/AC unit then no that is way too high.

Call around, also go to Angie's list for some better contractors to get some more estimates. Also a good tip show them your high estimate and say that it was way out there. Anyone decent that is not trying to take you to the cleaners will do it for thousands less than that estimate.
