I installed a new thermostat wrong. After I corrected the wiring,

Customer Question

I installed a new thermostat wrong. After I corrected the wiring, the heat on the furnance would not turn on. If I turn the fan to on, it goes on. If I turn it to automatic, the fan does not go on. The heat does not go on at all. Is it possible that I blew a fuse or something on the furnace? Or is it another simple solution that I can check before I have to get someone in to fix it.

A-1 Tech :

Hello, My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will assist you today

A-1 Tech :

There may be a simple solution.

A-1 Tech :

Do you have the model of the new stat?

Customer:

it isn't the thermostat, I reinstalled the old one and it still doesn't work

Customer:

it is a goodman mid-effeciency furnance

A-1 Tech :

If the blower runs, it shouldn't be the fuse

A-1 Tech :

But there is a fuse on the furnace circuit board

Customer:

what would you suggest to get some heat in here?

A-1 Tech :

Can you tell me the wire colors and the terminal they go to on the stat?

Customer:

there was a red, a green and a brown

A-1 Tech :

Lets double check the wires at the stat first

Customer:

ok

A-1 Tech :

you don't have air conditioning?

Customer:

red went to r; green to G and the Browwn to Y

Customer:

no a\c

A-1 Tech :

Y is for air conditioning

Customer:

oh, so that is one problem

Customer:

I will move it to the w

A-1 Tech :

Brown is usually a neutral, but it must be used for heat in this case.

A-1 Tech :

W is for heat

Customer:

if I set it to w, the fan does not come on if the seeting is on heat, it will come on if it is on cold

A-1 Tech :

The blower for the heat has a time delay at the furnace

A-1 Tech :

Those are the only wires being used?

Customer:

only 3 yes

Customer:

i left it like that for some time so the delay shouldn't have been a problem

A-1 Tech :

Put the brown back to the W and turn to heat, the burners should come on

A-1 Tech :

okay, take the brown off and hold it to the red and see if the heat comes off

Customer:

the fan comes on when it is turned on, but when I turn it to auto and turn up the heat it does not come on

A-1 Tech :

I think the wire colors are not up to normal. The red may not be the hot

A-1 Tech :

Is the furnace near by?

Customer:

if i touch the green and red the fan comes on

Customer:

the furnance is in the bsmt and I can go down there

A-1 Tech :

Yes, but the green may be the hot wire

Customer:

ok, what do you suggust I do?

A-1 Tech :

go to the furnace and check what terminals have what color wire to them

A-1 Tech :

We need to identify the hot

A-1 Tech :

which is theR terminal

Customer:

i'm at the furnace, how do i find it noiw?

A-1 Tech :

do you see where the thermostat wires go into the furnace?

A-1 Tech :

Just follow those wires and tell me what they connect to

Customer:

I have a red and brown wire

Customer:

the red goes to w r g c

Customer:

the brow goes to r g

A-1 Tech :

The red should go to the R

A-1 Tech :

The green should go to the G

A-1 Tech :

The brown should go to the W

Customer:

the red = r

Customer:

brown = w

Customer:

green =g

A-1 Tech :

great

A-1 Tech :

while you are at the furnace, jumper from the R to the W and see if the heat comes on

Customer:

on the furnace or thermostat

A-1 Tech :

at the furnace

Customer:

what do i use as a jumper?

A-1 Tech :

is there a short piece of wire there? If not a paper clip unfolded will work

A-1 Tech :

it is low voltage

Customer:

don't know the volots

A-1 Tech :

it should be 24 volts at those terminals, just like the stat

Customer:

ok, the fan went on when i touched both the r and w

A-1 Tech :

and the heat?

Customer:

go

Customer:

how do i tell if the heat is on

A-1 Tech :

did you see if the burners came on at the furnace?

Customer:

sorry, what do the burners look like

A-1 Tech :

The section of the furnace you are looking at, is it where the blower is?

Customer:

okay, burner did go on

A-1 Tech :

great

A-1 Tech :

lets go wire the stat to match the wires at the furnace now

A-1 Tech :

red to R

A-1 Tech :

green to G

A-1 Tech :

brown to W

Customer:

ok, done

Customer:

if I turned it to on, the fan does not go on on the heat but if I turn it to cold it goes on

Customer:

doesn't go on on the auto function

A-1 Tech :

you have the front on the stat?

Customer:

yes

A-1 Tech :

We are connected as above? R G W ?

Customer:

yesw

A-1 Tech :

Why were you changing the thermostat?

Customer:

to a programable one

Customer:

I just to the face plate off and the fan turned on and now doesn't turn off

A-1 Tech :

ok, so the heat was working before you changed it.

Customer:

yes

A-1 Tech :

Is the fan to the on position?

Customer:

now it is off

A-1 Tech :

okay

Customer:

it wasn't on the on posisition

A-1 Tech :

with fan on auto, turn the heat on and set above room temperature

A-1 Tech :

then go down and see if the burners came on please

Customer:

the burner is on and the fan is running

A-1 Tech :

great

Customer:

however, if I turn it to the off positioin, it doesn't turn off

A-1 Tech :

looks like we got it

A-1 Tech :

It will run on a timer and then shut off

A-1 Tech :

turn it off and give it a couple minutes

Customer:

i took the face plate off and it is still running

Customer:

ok, I turned it off

A-1 Tech :

the thermostat does not control the fan for heating

A-1 Tech :

Now you can install the new stat using the same terminals we are using now.

Customer:

thanks

A-1 Tech :

thank you

A-1 Tech :

you can check back if you have any problems

A-1 Tech :

read the instructions good, you may need to set the new stat for gas heat.
