Carrier Infinity thermostat reading Sens Error where outside

Customer Question

Carrier Infinity thermostat reading "Sens Error" where outside air temp usually displayed and "System Malfunction" - furnace intermittently shutting down, temp drops as low as 60 degrees in the house. Have both Carrier Furnace and A/C. Located circuit board inside A/C unit outside after removing housing. Circuit board flashing error code 16 (System Communications Failure). The error code has disappeared and reappeared several times.

What is likely wrong / needs replacing? Seems like the furnace is working fine but shutting down based on faults coming from the circuit board in the A/C unit (I am assuming that the outdoor air temp sensor is located in the A/C unit - but I don't know what it looks like). Is there a workaround where I can disable the outddor air sensor to stop the furnace from shutting down?
