the red lever needs to be "held" in the "set" position, this will allow gas to go to pilot, it is a log reach back to light it , sometimes they provide a match holding extention wire to assit.

I managed to light the pilot but when i let go of the red lever the pilot shut off.

How long do i wait before i release the red lever, and on what setting should i set it.

you must wait at least one min. if it goes out when you release you more than likely need the have the thermocouple replaced. these are not easy to change out.graphic
