I am not aware of any problems specific to this unit. Payne is a less expensive version of Carrier's pricier models with ~90% of the same parts. Hot surface ignitors on the other hand often fail but 3 in 6 years is a bit extreme. The only cause for this recurring problem that comes to mind is touching the surface of the ignitor during handling/installation. The oils from your hand can leave a residue on the ignitor that can cause it to fail prematurely.
