Customer Question

I have a Carrier 58mvp080 Furnace and my blower motor stop working and I trace the problem to a bad blower control module. All I need to know is can I just replace the module with out having to get a new motor and if I can where can I get one. It should be able to be replaced its nothing but a black hub/cover looking thing attach to the motor with a circuit board inside i

Expert's Answer

Hi,

Would be news to me and I worked for them. Unless its an aftermarket part,

Call local Carrier or Bryant dealer and ask. Don't press accept and you won't be charged.

Thanks

Mark

Just for the record I have a troubleshooting guide for my furnace and in there it even tells me's word for word. Replace entire blower motor or blower control module attached to the blower motor. If you replace the blower module goto step 44. Always inspect failed motor for water damage. If present, find source of water and fix. Check A-coil and/or Humidifier. That's what it says notice the or that means it can be replace or the trouble shooting guide is lying. I am not trying to sound like a jerk but maybe not you but most HVAC Service Techs want you to buy a new motor and charge me $750- $1000.00 why because that's how they make there money they are not going to tell me the truth and save me money because it does not benefit them. so i will call up carrier but i already know it will cost more from them then if i get it after market and that what i need to know where can i get one after market.

Response From Expert

Hi,

It makes it sound like you can replace the module. What age is the furnace ?

Thanks

Mark.

The furnace was made on 3/4/1997. When we bought the house it was already here. also i think i have found a control module for the motor if my motor is made by GE then this module should work i found it for $390.00 thats more then what i want to spend but i might have no choice this is the link were i found it at http://www.acfurnace.com/?ACTION=PartNumber&PN_ID=2169. I have done a lot of research on this furnace. I have to because i refuse to pay that kind of money that the HVAC Service techs want to fix the thing. I had a tech come out in the beginning of winter when i was haveing problems with it igniting and it was throwing out code 34 and he told me it was my filter at first and charge me $80.00 and that was not the problem at all he never once did any type of dianotstics on the furnace well after that i decided to do things on my own come to find out after i downloaded the trouble shooting guide for my furnace that it was a bad ignitor so now i do all my own work on the furnace and thats what i did today and i know for 100% sure that its the blower module and i don't want to spend and are and a leg for a new one because if thats the case i shall buy a new furnace then.

Hi,

If I were you and if you can get along without a variable speed blower I would deep six that furnace because the ECM module and motor aren't the only 400 dollar parts on it. That circuit board is expensive also and so is the inducer motor. All of which you can plan on replacing at some point. 90% furnaces don't really pay they save energy but they don't save you any money.

Thanks

Mark.
