Hi Donna, this is Dr Weaver and I hope I can help you and your horse out. When you say he has constipation, what symptoms are you seeing exactly?

What part of the country are you in? If you are in the south or (like Florida), sometimes sand can cause digestive problems.

Have you had his teeth checked? If his teeth need floating, that can cause them not to chew their food well.

Equine diets should be mostly forage based, so pasture and good quality hay should be the main part of his diet. Alfalfa hay or other legume hay, tends to keep their stools a little softer than other hay. As far as grain goes, you may want to consider a senior feed, they are usually balanced with all the vitamins and minerals they need and they are designed to be easy to chew and digest.
