We acquired a Belgian/Clydesdale Mare 2 wks ago. Was checked by the vet within 1st wk. It seems to me that she excessively sweats all day and even night. Has been very warm outside during the day (80+ to 90+), she stands and sleeps in the sun, choosing to not take cover. She drinks and uses salt lick (a little) we give a ration balancer 2tx /day to supplement grass and grass hay. Just never had a horse covered in sweat without a workout.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Horse Gender: Female Age: 14 Name of Horse: Kelli Already Tried: Keeping her in the wooded area so as to force her out of the sun. Won't know until tonight if that has helped.
I think you are on the right track
this said, if having her stay in the shade does not resolve the issue, she will need to have her cardiac and pulmonary function reexamined closely:
would recommend an ECG, and a full pulmonary evaluation (auscultation, including with bad, possibly Xrays)
Hi Joanne,I'm just following up on our conversation about Kelli. How is everything going?Dr M
