Customer Question

I have a welsh pony that is 26 years old. Within the last year he has really dropped a lot of weight and his muscle tone. He used to be a chubby little pony and now he is thin and slender. I think most of it was due to a new horse that was stealing his food. I boarded somewhere else and didnt know this was happening. Right now he is getting senior feed and 2-3 flakes of hay in the morning and at night. What kind of supplements can I feed him to help put that weight and muscle back on in a healthy way?

Dr M :

a high fat feed would be ideal.

Dr M :

rice bran can work, or a commercial food high in fat (omegatin from blue seal is an example)

Dr M :

it would be wise to run some basic bloodwork on the pony to make sure that there is no disease process ongoing.

Customer : We have had some chilly weather lately with some rain and he has been shivering. I immediately brought him inside and gave him some hay to warm him up. Would this be caused by the lack of muscle too keep him warm?
Dr M :

possibly,

Customer : What about wheat grem oil with his grain? I will try the feed you mentioned also.
Dr M :

canola oil would be best

Hi Tara,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Synbad. How is everything going?

He is okay. I added another scoop of grain to his diet. I'm gonna have a vet come out to do a quick check up and take a look at his teeth. He has a lot of tarter build up that needs to be removed so maybe that is effecting his eating. I am gonna start adding canola oil to his grain and see if that helps with weight gain before I invest in anything too expensive. May also have to buy I rain sheet because when the temp drops he starts shivering.
