Hi Diane,Great question. Linseed/flaxseed is often used in horses to improve/maintain condition and improve hair coat often producing a shiny, glossy coat.It contains good amounts of omega oils which are known and proven to be beneficial for muscle repair, strength and tone as well as providing natural anti-inflammatory effects. It will have an energy value just as vegetable oil does however, it is considered to be anon-warming source of energy so it shouldn't make your mare more highly strung/active.Generally it is given as a supplement to skin/coat condition, hoof quality as well as promote joint, muscle, tendon and ligament support. So I would have no hesitation in continuing the use of the linseed oil.I hope this answer is helpfulGood luckDr Dan Makin
