I will be buying a water tank for my horses new home - are there any known health concerns for either a metal or plastic (Rubbermaid) type stock tank? Thank you!
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Horse Gender: Male Age: 20 Name of Horse: Merlin Already Tried: They have been drinking from an auto waterer made of steel for years and I'm moving them to a new place. For the gender question above - did you mean me or the horse? I answered the horse.
Either type of tank is fine. There are no specific health concerns related to either type. Personally, I find the metal ones easier to get really clean, and the plastic ones are usually black which means the water heats up more in the summer promoting algae growth. Hope this helps!
Thank you! Mostly I was wondering if the plastic tanks emitted BPA (no more old plastic water bottles for me, thing); Since I live in a northern clime, a friend says her Rubbermaid tank stays unfrozen longer due to it's black color, but I wondered if any studies had been done on these tanks concerning BPA (do you know if they are made with this substance in the plastic?). My horses had lived for 14 years drinking from a metal tank with no problem, but they also had access to a stream during the summer/fall. But thank you for your information! Cathryn
I believe that the Rubbermaid tanks are safe in terms of BPA. However, the metal tanks are more convenient.
