Customer Question

HI, I HAVE A 12 YEAR OLD GELDING WHO WAS GELDED BEFORE THE AGE OF 2 (BOTH TESTICALS WERE DESCENDED). HE WAS NEVER USED FOR BREEDING PURPOSES AND HAS BEEN EVALUATED BY MY LOCAL VET INCLUDING A PHYSICAL EXAM AND BLOOD WORK WHICH WERE ALL WNL (INCLUDING HIS TESTOSTERONE LEVELS). HE HAS STARTED EXHIBITING “STUDDISH” BEHAVIOR SUCH AS SNAKING THE MARES, MOUNTING THEM, CALLING TO THEM WHEN REMOVED FROM THE PASTURE, ETC. MY VET SUGGESTED DEPO PROVERA INJECTIONS. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT A STANDARD DOSE IS FOR A @ 1000# XXXXX AND THE FREQUENCY OF THE DOSING TO SUPPRESS THESE BEHAVIORS? I KNOW THIS MEDICATION DOES NOT HAVE A LABELED USE FOR THIS TYPE OF TREATMENT, HOWEVER IT SEEMS TO BE USED NOT THAT UNCOMMONLY FOR GELDINGS EXHIBITNING THIS BEHAVIOR. IS MEDROXYPROGESTERONE THE GENERIC FORM OF DEPO PROVERA AND IS IT DOSED AND GIVEN THE SAME WAY?
SINCERELY

Dr Rik Daniels :

Stallion-like behavior in geldings is one of the most common behavioral complaints among horse owners. It is usually only in the pasture and can often be eliminated by turning the horse out with other geldings only. Depo-provera (medroxyprogesterone) will usually help this behavior as well. For a 1000# XXXXX, I give 8cc of depo-provera IM, then 8cc one week later and then 8cc every 3-4 weeks. I have not seen any adverse effects from using it. Hope this helps. Customer : Is that 100 mg/ml?
Dr Rik Daniels :

Yes, sorry. 100mg/ml.

Customer :

Thank your very much for your time and information. I look forward to trying this treatment with my horse:)
