I have a 34year old pony that s bottom is looking quite strange seems to be a gap between her anus and where wee comes out. And poo is all over her legs. She is underweight but apart from that is healthy and alert. Should i be concerned ?
Good Morning and welcome to Just answer. I am Dr. Loretta, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your question.
As ponies age, there is a sloping of this area so that the anus is inferior to the urethra...when younger, your girl had this conformation as straight so when the stool comes out, it falls to the ground without interfering with the vaginal vault. As she ages, this slopes and then this stool can come into contact with the vaginal vault and there is a much higher risk of a urinary tract infection or a vaginal infection. There are surgical procedures that your vet can perform but, because of your girl's age, it is probably best to attempt to clean this area daily to prevent other infections.
