Replaced fuel pump in my 1999 CRV. Drove fine for two days

Customer Question

Replaced fuel pump in my 1999 CRV. Drove fine for two days but the fuel level sensor did not work. Replaced the pump, fuel level now works, engine started, ran for 2 minutes, died, now will not start. Fuel pressure good, main EFI relay checks okay, voltage to injectors okay, NOID lights flash, injectors flow tested okay, runs on starter fluid, but does not appear to be getting any gas. Strangeness!.
JA: Are you certain it's the fuel pressure sensor that's in need of attention? What about the fuel rail? Have you checked it yet?
Customer: There is pressure on the fuel rail. Removed the back pressure regulator to see.
JA: Are you fixing your CR-V yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no

Hi Im David, thanks for visiting the site, when you try to star the vehicle is the red security light going out?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I did not notice. I checked for error codes and there are none. There is no theft device holding it out.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
If possible, call me after 4 PM at(###) ###-####

Are you sure you didnt cross/pinch the fuel lines the second time you replaced the pump?

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

you replaced the pump. it worked for 2 days and would have continued to work except for the level sensed not working, so you replaced it again and now it doesnt start. what is the fuel pressure with the new pump installed? can you hear it run when the key is in the on position?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Fuel pump runs 2-3 sec per design. After connecting pressure gauge, pressure went to about 20 psi on first key turn, about 30 on next, 40 on next, then back pressure regulator started operating and fuel pressure stayed around 40 psi.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

ok. good. how long did it take for the pressure to drop back down?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
It stayed there for a few minutes until I removed the gauge assembly. Did not appear to leak down.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
In answer to light question. No security light. Photo of dash during start attempt attached.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Lights shown on with key. Brake light illuminates on start attempt.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

ok, but there is a security light that does light up and go out correct?

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

did you pull the vac hose off the fpr to see if theres fuel present?

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

spray some starting fluid and see if she starts for a few seconds, so we can rule out spark or compression.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
No security light. Key on before start attempt photo attached: SRS, battery, oil, seatbelt.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
As I reported in my initial question, it does start on starting fluid.
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
What is FRP?
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

sorry, i missed that.

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

fuel pressure regulator

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

oops.FPR

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
There is not fuel in the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator (either end).
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

ok, its supplied by a pressure sensor then

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

so we have fuel, spark, compression, have you check any related fuses for ign/fuel/pcm/mfi/inj??

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Not sure what you are asking. Fuel comes in on the left side from the pump, has a pulsation dampener. Spills back to the tank thru the regulator with a vacuum hose above the diaphragm.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

and the brake light illuminates while cranking?

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

the vac hose above the diaphram...pull that off.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
All fuses okay. Brake light comes on while cranking. All lights Go out when car starts on starting fluid, normal.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

ok. im gonna look up one more thing.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Pulled vacuum hose same result. Starts on fluid then dies.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

When the ignition switch is failing, the brake warning light may not come on under these conditions, or else it lights up and then goes out

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

bingo

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Seems to me the injectors are not opening, but the main regulator tested good and the noid lights flashed on each injector lead, and I had the injectors tested.
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

the only thing that would keep the injector from opening is the computer.

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
How do I test the ignition switch. It seems to be doing everything it is supposed to do.
Could the computer be bad?
Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Would the noid lights flash if the computer was bad?
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

nope. you got a point. so im condeming the ignition switch....

Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

any update?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I had to work last night and tonight, so it will be a couple of days before I can test the ignition switch
Expert:  david craig replied 4 months ago.

ok. sounds good

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I can find no problem with the ignition switch.
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I checked the main relay again. It has not solder problems. It passes the check procedure I found for checking proper operation. Maybe it fails under load. I will order a new one and try this. Not much else to try. :-(
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ok. keep me in the loop. and thats a good possibilty

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

any news?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Will not get the relay until tomorrow
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ok. thanks

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
New relay, exact same result. Starts on starter fluid but gets no gas and dies 2 seconds later. Plenty of fuel pressure. Maybe there is a secret anti theft shutdown
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ok, lets try this again. when you turn the key to the run position(not start) does the check engine light come on?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
4 lights come on: SRS on the Tac, Oil, Battery, Seatbelt
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
During cranking, the Break light next to seatbelt light comes on, the Oil and Battery light go out.
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Brake light
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
The check engine light comes on for 2 seconds and then goes out when turned to Run position.
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

the check engine light is supposed to remain on in the run position. that is an idication the ecm is working. if its going out then the computer is bad.

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

its only supposed to go out when the vehicle is started

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Okay
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

let me know when you get another computer.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Will do
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

thanks

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Will the replacement computer have to be programmed?
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

if its from the same year model make ,same part number and same options, then no.
