2006 Pilot - 165k miles - Slight thumping noise that gets

Customer Question

2006 Pilot - 165k miles - Slight thumping noise that gets louder and you can feel at 70-80 mph. We just had shocks replaced and noise still there. Any ideas?
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: Its been there for 2-3 years, maybe longer and seems to be getting more intense. I believe it is in the drivetrain or tires.
JA: Are you fixing your Pilot yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: No. We just had suspension service.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I am planning to have a new set of tires put on for the winter but want to confirm this issue first. Don't want to rebalance tires to find out its in the drivetrain.

Hello welcome to just answer I am master tech and will be able to assist you.

can you tell me this changes when your on or off the gas ?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
Seems independent of gas, brake or coast but seems dependent on vehicle speed
Expert:  MASTER TECH replied 5 months ago.

ok thank you for that info.

I would like you to run your hand across the tire and see if you feel any uneven in the tread pattern.

I have a feeling you have cupped tires or a tire separation.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I will need to do this later. I have previously visually inspected the tires and the treads looked ok.
Expert:  MASTER TECH replied 5 months ago.

ok make sure to check all 4 tires

you want to see for any uneven in the surface

ok

Ran my hands around the tread of every tire. They are all smooth with no cupping or uneven wear.

Ok we might have a axle issue.

we have well documented axle issues for vibrations

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
Ok. Is it typically shaft or bearing that needs replacing?
Expert:  MASTER TECH replied 4 months ago.

it will be the axle shaft.

now if your driving this on the highway and this vibrates /thumps at tip in throttle and stops when you release the gas then a inner cv joint is failed.

you can get under the the car and then with one hand hold the inner joint cup and then with your other hand twist the axle shaft a little to see if you can feel any play when you twist back and forth typically we see the right side (passengers side) axle with the most issues.

we replace these on a regular basis at my dealer .
