Customer Question

I lost my key to my 2005 crv. I had it replaced. The old key had an alarm button. The new one does not. I locked the doors and the alarm was set. I can't disarm the alarm and my car won't start.
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself?
Customer: Yes I'm in a parking lot.
JA: Great! What have you tried so far?
Customer: Pushing a button and trying to start the car wit the new key.
JA: Is there anything else the Honda Mechanic should be aware of about your Honda?
Customer: It's the factory alarm system.
JA: I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the Honda Mechanic about your situation and connect you two.

When you open the CR-V does the horn start going off?

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
No but when I close the door the horn beeps 4 time quickly.

Sounds like you have a key that is not programmed to start the CR-V. There is a chip inside and if you look at the dash board you will see a green light that looks like a key flashing. That light is not supposed to be flashing.

You will need to have the vehicle towed to the nearest Honda dealer to program the key to you CR-V.

Sorry the news is not better or easier for you.

It started this morning just fine. When I hit the lock is when the trouble started. Does that change the situation?
Expert:  Steve replied 8 months ago.

was it started with this new key you have?

Then this does change the situation. Do you see the green light flashing?

I assume the engine does turn over but will not run....correct?

Expert:  Steve replied 8 months ago.

Try locking the door with the key and unlocking it again using the key and let me know what happens.

DI'd not start. The alarm light is flashing blue
Customer: replied 8 months ago.
It has power but it won't start.
Expert:  Steve replied 8 months ago.

A blue alarm light is not factory. Look under the dash on the drivers side for a small toggle switch or black button. When you turn the key to on move the toggle switch or push the button and then try to start the CR-V.

If the does not work try to follow those wires to the "brain box" for the alarm and try to unplug everything. This may get you started.

It is going to be tough from here since this is not a factory system and do not know exactly what you have.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
Ok. I bought it new at honda and this is what came with it.
Expert:  Steve replied 8 months ago.

I do understand that but a Honda accessory alarm would have a red led mounted right behind the steering wheel.

I will be away from my computer for about an hour but wil be back if you need me.

Customer: replied 8 months ago.
That worked! I disabled the steering cut off while now it started. Thank you!
Customer: replied 8 months ago.

Beeping

Glad you got it to start. Now if you push the button or flip the switch back and forth it may stop the horn also.

You can not pull the horn fuse because it is also for the brake lights.
