When the shifter will not release from Park, first- Check your brake lights and see if they are working when you step on the brake pedal.

If the brake lights are NOT working, check fuse# XXXXX in the under-hood fuse box. If the fuse is good, and still no brake lights, then the problem will be the Brake Pedal Position Switch located at the top of the brake pedal arm. This switch controls the rear brake lights and also sends a signal to the Shift Interlock, telling it to release when the brake pedal is depressed. Inspect the electrical connector for any loose/broken wires. Inspect the switch and the contact point and make sure there are no visual defects. If the visual inspection checks ok, replacing the switch will solve the problem.

If the brake lights ARE working, then the problem will be in the shift interlock system. Very commonly, the Shift Interlock Solenoid. This solenoid is located on the shift assembly, under the plastic cover. Inspect the electrical connector for any loose, broken or pinced wires. If the visual inspection checks ok, suspect a faulty solenoid.

In the meantime... there is an "over-ride" slot on the top corner of the shifter assembly. Remove the cover, insert a key or equivalent tool, shift the shifter into Neutral. You can now start the engine, and shift into Drive.
