I was driving my honda crv 2003 on the freeway in very hot

This answer was rated:

I was driving my honda crv 2003 on the freeway in very hot weather when suddenly the radio lost power, followed by the air conditioner going out and then all the dials on the dash going to zero (speedometer, odometer). As I started to slow down to pull off, everything came back on. The battery had some white foam on one terminal and we cleaned that. It worked fine this morning when it was cooler but the same thing happened when I was on the freeway coming home (I drive about 35 miles each way) Any ideas?

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com

FixUrHonda :

This sound like a Alternator issue.

FixUrHonda :

When the alternator stops charging properly the car will run off the battery.

FixUrHonda :

As the battery gets weaker, control system will shut down so the remaining power can keep the car running.

FixUrHonda :

Such as the radio and AC and then the meter.

FixUrHonda :

and so on.

FixUrHonda :

I would suggest you have the Alternator load tested to verify, so this doesn't leave you stuck.

If you have any more questions on this, please feel free to ask. Thanks Jay!

Customer:

Thank you. This is what a local mechanic suggested but I wanted to verify that it makes sense. I'll have him check the alternator load. IF it is diagnosed as an alternator problem will it need to be replaced? How much would this cost?

FixUrHonda :

I always recommend to use Genuine Parts,

FixUrHonda :

So your looking around almost 300 for the alternator if you get it from the dealer, you can get it cheaper after market but they don't last.

FixUrHonda :

As for labor it's around 2 to 3 hours labor

FixUrHonda :

Thanks Jay!

Customer:

OK thanks. Hopefully this will do the trick.
