Customer Question

HOnda Accord EXi 2004 2.2L is overheating in summer when i use the air con. THe air con itself works very well is cold quickly but on hot days when driving around town and stopping frequently at lights the engine suddenly starts to overheat, which is brought under control by not using any air con? Is this a fan issue, where it fails to cool the engine back down? THere are two fans for the radiator under the bonnet the one on the drivers side feels a bit stiff it rotates but not easily? THe other I think is the air con fan and it spins easily? Any ideas on what this problem might be caused by?

Country: Australia
Make: Honda
Model: Accord EXi
Year: 2004
Engine: 2.2L

Already Tried:
Turning off the air con on hot days. Someone said the t stat could be the problem but it regulates it's temperature very well through winter and most of summer, and when the cars heater is turned on and air con off the heat drops back and rests exactly where it should?

Kyle N :

Hi, my name is XXXX XXX I'm a Honda expert here at JustAnswer.com. I'd be glad to help you with your question.

Kyle N :

More than likely the fan motor on the driver's side (the condenser fan for the A/C system) is bad and causing the problem. You'll need to replace that fan motor to fix the problem. Hope that helps.

Customer :

how does the air con work so well if the fan motor is failing?

Customer :

it's not a fan belt problem?

Kyle N :

The engine fan is pulling air across the condenser and if the vehicle is moving air is blowing across the radiator so it still works.

Kyle N :

Your car has no fan belt

Kyle N :

They are completely electric

Kyle N :

I just had an Accord at the dealer where I work that had the same exact problem.

Customer :

ok that makes sense, I'm glad you didn't think it was the t stat, i had taken the car on a drive to Swan Hill to Melbourne and the air con had been on for the last part of the journey and started making the most horrific sound, so it may well be the motor, thank you for your help. Am I fine to source an aftermarket fan motor

Customer :

I tend to buy genuine Honda parts when it's really needed and aftermarket if there is very little difference in the function of the part?

Kyle N :

There is little different in aftermarket in that part.

Kyle N :

The cost savings will be pretty good too. I think that motor is about $250 USD aftermarket was about $100 USD

Customer :

hello? I will accept but would like your opinion on weather to splash out on a genuine part or save on secondhand or aftermarket

Customer :

ok great I do that your help has been great thank you very much i will accept now

Kyle N :

No second hand or aftermarket should be ok

Customer :

ok thank you Kyle

Kyle N :

no problem

HI Kyle,

Thanks for your thoughts, but the fan motor was fine. I found the problem was none of the above but a fuse had blown that operates the fan. Cost was $1.70 to fix. This model of Honda Accord EXi 1994 just goes and goes, with a little bit of care. It's only the second fuse to blow in 18 years of use. Thanks for your help it got me checking to see if the fan was perhaps not receiving any power
