If motion is in vertical direction, it need not rest on any surface.
The language of the questions says that mass rests on surface having negligible friction. It shows that motion is horizontal.
Further it says how fast is the box moving when it is 2m vertically higher than its starting position. It shows that motion is vertical. This is creating doubt. Kindly clarify it.
