A heat pump is similar to an air conditioner, where the heat pump transfers heat from the "hot" environment by removing thermal energy from the "cool" environment. Once again, external work is required to perform the cycle, because heat is not spontaneously transferred from cool to hot. The coefficient of performance of the heat pump, KHP, is the ratio of the amount of heat added to the "hot" environment to the amount of external work required to perform the cycle.
The same device can act as both an air conditioner and a heat pump (after all, they do the same thing), running the exact same cycle.
