1. A portion of a specific DNA molecule consists of the following sequence

Resolved Question:

1. A portion of a specific DNA molecule consists of the following
sequence of nucleotide triplets:

TAC GAA CTT CGG TCC

This DNA sequence codes for the following short polypeptide composed of 5 amino acids:
methionine - leucine - glutamic acid - proline - arginine

a. Describe the steps in the synthesis of this polypeptide.

b. What would be the effect of a deletion or an addition in one of the DNA nucleotides?

c. What would be the effect of a substitution in one of the nucleotides?

2. Proteins, large complex molecules, are major building blocks of all living organisms. Discuss the following in relation to proteins.

The chemical composition and levels of structure of proteins.
The roles of DNA and RNA in protein synthesis
The roles of proteins in membrane structure and transport of molecules across the membrane.

Owen :

What specifically are they looking for with the steps in the synthesis - do you mean synthesizing this DNA sequence?

Owen :

IF that is the case then the sequence is matched essentially by matched pairing such that it is paired from when the DNA divides and replicates during meiosis/ mitosis - and hence the sequence is then matched such from the pair of atg ctt gaa gcc agg

Owen :

b. If you delete or add a DNA you can produce or delete a product from this sequence such that you might not make a protein or you produce the wrong protein.

Owen :

c. Proteins are essentially produced initially from the DNA structure which is then converted to the RNA structure which then is converted to Amino acids and then the amino acids are converted into a bigger structure called protein.

Owen :

Proteins in membranes of cells allow the cells to provide many important process such as distribution of Ions, and movement of cellular material in and out of the cell such as water.
