Picassos painting, Guernica, about the tragedies of the Spanish

Picasso’s painting, Guernica, about the tragedies of the Spanish Civil War, uses only black, grey, and white colors. How are these colors appropriate to the subject matter?

Ray Atkinson :

Grey is a mixture of black and white. Death is a black and white situation, either laife and death. War has two sides, us and them. The Spanish Civil War had two sides, right and wrong. Keeping the color scheme to two colors keeps the mind focused on the duality of the situation.
