This is probably the wrong place to ask this type of question, but I'll give it a shot anyway. The subject is language learning. Specifically a new language and pertains mostly to memorization ease or difficulty. I sometimes feel I have forgotten how to learn and perhaps that is the problem. I have found that circumstance plays an enormous role in language retention. I can listen to a 30 minute audio recording twice a day for five days and be lucky to retain 60% of what I listened to. However if I were to hear someone speak a word or even a sentence in another language in a manner that startled me or otherwise excited my level of attention I somehow attain instant long term memorization of what was said along with the meaning if explained. My first experience of this phenomenon occurred while driving down the road with my wife who happens to be Chinese. She excitedly shouted out, "look at the shoe!, look at the shoe! It is so pretty". I naturally start looking all around me for a shoe store display, but there is nothing. So I ask what she is talking about and she says it has such pretty flowers. Then she remembers the 'English' word she meant to use for her statement. It was 'Tree'. In Chinese the word for 'tree' is 'shu'. Pronounced just like 'shoe' in English. It all instantly made sense that she was talking about a tree we passed with pretty flowers. That was over 3 years ago and I still remember that moment like it was yesterday and the Chinese word for tree is forever burned into my memory. There have been similar circumstances to this. What I have been trying to figure out with no success is how to make that kind of language memorization work all the time with no success. Seems I cannot fool myself in to thinking something is exciting when it is not.It is similar I guess to what happens when a child hears a parent utter a curse word under emotion. They instantly remember it and repeat it to anyone that will listen. So after all of that the botXXXXX XXXXXne question is does anyone know how to make that kind of language memorization occur at will?
