The first defensive attorneys to hire experts to assist in jury selection were those in the case of the "Harrisburg Seven" (a group of Vietnam War protestors) in 1971. The attorneys hired several social scientists in an effort to select sympathetic jurors. The social scientists used surveys, administered to 1,000 residents of Harrisburg, PA, to construct attitudinal and demographic profiles indicating which potential jurors might be sympathetic/unsympathetic to the defendants. The process became known as Scientific Jury Selection.
