Contacting the County District Attorney or Public Defender's Office The next step would be to contact the county District Attorney or Public Defender' s office in order to inquire about any cases which occurred because of the lack of police professionalism. These cases will support my research and assist in meeting the primary goal of my research. Some examples of cases which could support my research would be cases that have been dismissed due to the police officer failing to read Miranda rights to a suspect or mistreating a suspect during an interrogation.
A case that would support my research is the case of Handyman Harlis Miller. Miller was serving a life sentence for the murder of Westport Matron Isabel Sillan, however his conviction was reversed because police searched Miller's car without a warrant and submitted that evidence to prove Miller's guilt. The evidence submitted was deemed inadmissible evidence. The New York Daily News was quick to complain about"judicial concern for accused criminals outweighing judicial concern for the rights and safety of decent people."In fact, the most serious cause for concern rested with the police (Time Inc, 2009). If the police had taken the correct steps in obtaining the evidence, then Miller would have been convicted of the murder of Matron Isabel Sillan. The county District Attorney or Public Defender' s office could provide particular cases in which situations like this occurred and in turn it will support my research.
