Labeling and treating lawbreakers as criminals, especially in young, first-time offenders, usually only serves to create a negative self-concept in the offender. The person oftentimes associates a criminal record and label as a major factor in defining who he/she is, and will subsequently behave in a manner consistent with the stigmatizing label.
