Due 17 September 2010 by MIDNIGHT!

Resolved Question:

<p>Due 17 September 2010 by MIDNIGHT</p><p>Overview Conduct a make-shift interview with a Labor Relations Officer/Manager within your own Human Resource department or outside your company, either private or public sector. The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with real world exposure to the functions performed by labor relations. This assignment is worth 150 points; see rubric below. Assignment Criteria</p><p> </p><p><strong>Assignment Criteria</strong></p><ul><li>1. Write a 6 page paper (does not include title page or reference page/pages) providing a "summary" of the interview.</li><li>2. You will create the interview questions (do not submit the interview questions). It is your decision how many questions you use. You want to ask enough questions to gather <em>substantive</em> information about the Labor Relations Officer/Manager's job and function. Ask follow-up questions as appropriate. Some questions might include:</li><li>a. What are the typical functions of your job?</li><li>b. What challenges do union (or non-union) environments face?</li><li>c. What have you found to be the highest volume of labor issues? </li><li>d. Why do you think that issue(s) is so high?</li><li>3. Follow APA format guidelines.</li><li>4. The paper should NOT be just a list of questions and answers. I am not looking for any quoted material from your interviewee. This should be your encapsulation of the information obtained through the interview. Consider the interviewee's answers as raw data that now needs to be written in an academic content/format.</li><li>5. The paper should be your understanding of the information shared by the interviewee and what the information shared "means."</li><li>6. The paper should include theory application. In other words, once you have conducted the interview and begin writing your summary, what theories link to the Labor Relations Officer/Manager's processes/functions? For example, if your Labor Relations Officer/Manager states that he/she uses a specific grievance process, ask to see the process (theory) or find the process (theory) and review in your paper.</li></ul><strong><p><strong>HR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: THESE DO NOT HAVE TO BE USED.</strong></p><p>I had the distinctive privilege of sitting down and talking with Mrs. Castile; who currently serves as the Human resources manager at Lowes. She has been with the company over four years; she works forty-eight hours a week, no holidays, and no weekends off, but yet she does it for the love, and goes in every morning wearing the smile she wore the day before.  </p><p><strong>What is your current job description? </strong></p><p>"I wear's multiple hats, but I am primarily responsible for anticipating talent needs and addressing them through proactive and effective recruiting, staffing and training. Motivate and retain existing talent by anticipating human resource issues in the store through consistent and effective application of store policies, management practices, and legal requirements. Greet and acknowledge all internal customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service. She also anticipates talent needs and addresses them through proactive and effective recruiting, staffing and training". </p><p><strong>What motivates you the most about your job? </strong></p><p>"Interacting with others, making others smile, and I love to make people feel that they are a part of the team".</p><p><strong>Have you ever conducted an early termination?</strong></p><p>"Yes, and the first time I had to terminate an employee, I was sick for almost three days. I now know that it's a part of the job, but it still hurts because I know that it will still affect that family, whether directly or indirectly especially if they have children.  Please note for the record, that it is never my intentions to take anything away from any child".</p><p><strong>How often do you conduct counseling sessions? </strong></p><p>"We have two types of employees here. We have the Hourly's, whom gets counseled yearly, unless that they are having complications with their job performance. The other type is the Department Managers and above, they get counseled twice yearly. I would also like recognize that our four phases of our counseling; Initial, Written, Final, and Termination, has prevented me from conducting early terminations, which is always a great thing"!</p><p><strong>How do you deal with diversity? </strong></p><p>"Everyone is a part of the puzzle and we all count.  The trick is to include diversity into the conversation, and then you must be able to listen."</p><p> </p><p>If I wasn't quite sure in the beginning about being an HR rep, I am so totally convinced now. Having the opportunity to talk with Mrs. Castile, allowed me to see and feel the passion that one possesses as an HR representative up close and personal.  She maintained a great tone throughout the entire interview, the type of tone that just expressed total joy and happiness. At the end of meeting, she walked me out to the front, and it almost felt as if I was escorting a rock star; with the way management and employees were flocking to her as if they wanted her autograph.  Again seeing someone with passion like this, you would not want to do anything else other than to be an HR rep.</p></strong>

Hi Tonee, not to cause any more confusion, but here is what my instructor said in reference to the labor relations assignment! If I am not mistaking I think that you already addressed all of these issues.

This paper is about developing your questions and getting answers for them as indicated in the assignment. You are to use your own questions and I like to see the questions within your paper. When you get your answers from your interviewee, make sure this information in your own words and your interpretation. I think criteria 6 is the most challenging part of your paper. When you get to assignment criteria 6, the theory application is very important information and this is where you will need most of your citations --2 or 3 and of course an APA reference page is required as well. Citations are used the theory application only to show differences and to help you with your thoughts-I will say again "I am not looking for any quoted material from your interviewee." Needless to say again, you are using your interpretation of information given to you as you do in all questions and answers. Now your assignment gives you one example of theory application-the "grievance process." Others can be things like the bargaining process, arbitration and mediation, negotiations and alternative disputes resolutions; there are others as well. If you are not sure, you can e-mail me regarding your theory application to make sure it is one-keep in mind not everything is considered an application in labor relations. Total number of pages required are 6 to 10 , double space your writing (excluding title page and reference page)-6 pages is on the low end scale and would only encourage you to write short interpretations which would not be enough analysis to cover this project and your grade will not be at the top. You should have an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. In the introduction I would give a quick briefing about who you interview, company and what you covered such as questions. In the conclusion, I would briefly summarize your paper or something that stands out in your mind that you learned but tie it back to your paper. So I can follow your thoughts clearly, include the question in the body of your writing followed by "encapsulation of the information obtained through the interview" and/or your interpretation of the answer.

Hi Tonee,

I have busy as heck the past few weeks but I need your help! In regards XXXXX XXXXX interview; I guess my focus was supposed to be geared more towards labor relations instead of HR. You asked me this very same question before you started this paper. I was wrong; can you please help me out, because I have no clue about unions. Please see the message below:

You did a perfect job in your format and great questions, however your paper is not labor relations related. You took the approach from the human resource management's position in interpreting what goes on in human resources. As you know labor relations is an extension of HR but differ from HR because unions have different rules and procedures. As you know this class is all about labor relations which involves unionization and how it works and the facts that cover it. As long as you know what labor relations mean, what they do, and how it involves unions their way of doing thing, then you can take these same questions and alter them somewhat use them to get the labor relations information you need.

You still need that other Labor union paper due Oct 3 correct? I completed an outline and content for a first draft.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hey Tonee; I am confused now!

The Labor Relations Interview, paper needed to be re-done because it didn't focus on unions. As far as the other paper below; I thought you gave me this one with an outline. Is this making any sense to you? If it's confusing you, then I am just lost in the sauce.

The purpose of this project is to apply your critical thinking skills to address the following concepts in a comprehensive paper. Do not simply respond to these items, but provide a fully reviewed paper about the future of unions. The items below provide guideline points.

  • What changes are needed for unions to maintain support from their membership, the community, and the employers?
  • Labor unions are experiencing a decline, which includes political influence and membership.
  • Describe how generational aspects (baby boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y) are/have influenced labor unions.
  • What other external dynamics are impacting labor unions? For example, how does the global workforce impact union strategies?
  • Where they were, where they are, and where they need to go to remain or regain an active and viable organization in the 21st century.

The objective of this paper is to share your professional understanding related to labor relations and unions based on theory. Encapsulate the theories from the discussions, your readings, and the TCOs reviewed throughout the course in this paper.

Expert:  RopTeam replied 3 years ago.

I gave you 12 pages on this labor unions paper before but then afterwards you gave an outline or tcos?

So the 12 pages completed does not follow the tcos so it has to be updated...

Due to sexual harrassment paper/others I had to put the revision on hold till now.

I do remember you telling me that you would have to revised the other one, because yo didn't know what those tco's were. The sexual harassment is good and it has been submitted. So the only one that's out there is the one about unions and their future.

Thanks Tonee, for being patient and understanding!

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi Tonee,

Regardless of making the paper reflect the tco's will the outline stay the same?

  • This project is completed in three stages
  • The first two assignments (Stages I and II of the project) are worth 100 points each.
  • The final project (Stage III) is worth 270 points.
  • Stage I is due Week 2
  • Stage II is due Week 5
  • Stage III, the final project is due Week 7
  • Theory: There should be theory provided throughout all stages of this business plan to substantiate decisions made. All theory must be cited following APA format guidelines (APA Manual 5th or 6th edition). Anything copied word for word must be inside quotes and properly cited in text and on the reference list according to APA format guidelines. Any information that is not your own thought (theory) must also be cited. There should be no more than 5% of quoted material (information copied word for word) in any of these three assignments.
  • Introduction: The purpose is to: a) introduce the subject and its importance; and b) preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be covered.
  • Conclusion: Summarizes the main ideas and major support points from the body of your paper. This is not simply rephrasing the introduction or reviewing what was shared in the paper, but providing a closing paragraph for the reader.
  • All papers must follow these formatting guidelines.
    • Double-spaced
    • 1 inch margins (on all sides)
    • Times New Roman or Arial, size 12 font
    • Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure should be correct.
    • Title page includes: 1) title of the document; 2) your name; and 3) Keller Graduate School centered, double spaced.
    • Headers are helpful throughout the paper to insure all assignment criteria is included, helps with topical flow, and keeps paper organized.

Case Scenario: Fictitious Business Description

Castle's Family Restaurant has eight restaurants in the Northern California area with approximately 300-340 employees. Most of the employees are part time with approximately 40% of them full time. The operations manager, Jay Morgan, also acts as the HR manager and travels to each location each week to take care of scheduling, recruiting, hiring, and answering questions for the employees as needed. He also takes care of payroll using an Excel spreadsheet and has a computer application to print payroll checks. Mr. Morgan approaches you, an HR Consultant, for a proposal. Due to the increase in gasoline costs, he would like to greatly reduce his travel time for visiting each location each week and wonders if there is anything you can suggest to him to help him complete his HR tasks in a cost-effective manner. He hopes there is some way he can do part of his HR tasks from his office instead of traveling to each location.

Stage I (due Week 2)

Using the case scenario above, provide an assessment of the current business. Describe the company in terms of size, type of business, etc. Explain why you think an HRIS is needed. As the owner of your own HR consulting firm, write a 2-4 page paper that includes the following paper headings, which are denoted in call caps.

  • BUSINESS ASSESSMENT: The name, type, and size of business you're assisting; make assumptions in your business description using theory as needed and include the information in your paper for this case scenario. These assumptions would include background about a restaurant work environment and industry.
  • IDENTIFIED PROBLEMS: Review all HR problems identified. I recommend making a list of HR functions that you believe could be more efficient based on the information provided in the scenario. From that list, choose one HR function for analysis, which will be the main focus for your business plan. You want to explain why you chose that HR function as your first item, substantiate with theory.
  • HRIS NEEDS ASSESSMENT: Explain how automation might create a more efficient process from the HR function chosen. How might an HRIS application assist the business?

Stage II (due Week 4)

Provide a detailed description of the HRIS application(s) chosen for the business. What "type" of HRIS might create a more efficient process for the HR function chosen? This is not a copy/paste of information from a vendor web site, but an analysis and business plan to share with your customer. As the owner of your own HR consulting firm, write a 2-4 page paper that includes the following paper headings, which are denoted in call caps.

  • HRIS TYPE: Now that you've conducted some research in the previous assignment, you should have a good foundation to take the next step in your business plan. You should have a good review of the scenario, conducted some research on HRIS systems, and now your next step is to choose a type of HRIS. Share the "type" of system you plan to implement to help your customer. This must be substantiated in this paper to your customer from a theoretical perspective.
  • HRIS VENDOR CHOICE: Now that you have an HRIS type chosen, you need to now conduct research to find an HRIS vendor. You want to do a compare and contrast in this section of at least two vendors. Then, choose a vendor. Explain why you chose this vendor over another/others. Include the web address and proper citations for the vendor applications compared. You must have theory to support your decision.

Stage III (Final Project, due Week 7)

  • At this point of the project, you have identified the problem and a technology solution for the business. Now you want the business accept the idea.
  • Using your text, the previous stages completed with feedback provided, and the business plan template (see Doc Sharing), write a business plan to give to your customer, which details the risks, assumptions, impact, etc., of the proposed implementation of the HRIS.
  • This stage of the project should be a professional document that you would present to a customer leadership team to accept your business plan.
  • See Business Plan Template in Doc Sharing for detail re each section required.
  • Do not copy and paste Stage I and Stage II information into this Final Course Project. Stages I and II are considered raw data. You are now finalizing and summarizing. You are applying critical thinking skills to the data you've collected.
  • Submit your business plan to the Week 7: Course Project Stage III dropbox by the deadline.

Hello my good friend! I hope that u enjoyed your break from me? Here is my first assignment; I know that I must post this in a new post, but I am away from actual computer; so I wanted to try and give you a heads up on what you will be working on. Please if you are able to get started, I would reatly appreciate it. I will need week 2 part by Saturday of next week. I wll be posting this for $ 65.00 when I fly back home on Sunday.

Okay and thanks as usual! Here is the 2nd paper. I am just giving you heads up now; again when I get back home I will post these two seperately. This paper is somewhat like the first one; it is done in phases; this one also has a requirement by next Sunday. If not mistaken you have done something like this one for me already.

To create an example original Strategic Staffing Handbook that contains many of the vital tools used in the staffing process. Work must be original, meaning written by the student. Minimal borrowed material is permitted (no more than 10%) and must be cited via APA.

Guidelines and MilestonesPrint This Page

Guidelines

You are the new HR Business Partner at a fictitious medium-size organization and it is your job to create an original (not copied from the text or other sources) handbook with many of the tools needed in the strategic staffing process. The body of the project should develop the following staffing tools:

  • A definition of strategic staffing that supports the requirements of the organization.
  • A description of the job analysis process and an example job analysis format.
  • The approach to posting a position and the related rationale for taking that approach. Plus, a short example job posting.
  • An example application form and an explanation of how it should be implemented and related reasoning for the approach recommended. Make sure your application form contains only legally permitted inquiries. (The corrected application form from Week 5 cannot be used.)
  • Layout the interview process: (a) what is the organization's interview philosophy? (b) provide some examples of good (non-generic and legally acceptable) interview questions.
  • Describe the organization philosophy and approach to pre-employment testing and assessment (performance, background/criminal, drug, etc.).
  • Add in three other elements that you feel are important to the staffing process.

It is okay to use information from your prior course assignments to help build this project (except the Week 5 Application Form). In the end you should have a Strategic Staffing Handbook that you can use for reference in the future. Build this assignment for yourself!

The course project should be between 10-12 pages in length, double-spaced.

Milestones

  • The project outline should be completed and submitted in Week 2. One page is sufficient for your outline. Use the Guidelines above for assistance in building your outline. (30 Points)
  • The first draft of the project (approximately 25% of the work should be completed in draft form) should be completed and submitted in Week 4. (60 Points)
  • The final version of the project is due in Week 7.

For the second paper; I see no problem with using some of those question that you provided in that HR interview.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Hi Tonee, I am back and I have the two questions! I hope that you and your family are well. Take care and we shall chat soon.
