My Nakamichi BX-2 cassette deck is used infrequently, and has started behaving badly! When I put a cassette in and press the play button, it plays for about 5 seconds, then stops. If I do this a couple of times it starts unwinding the tape. Any suggestions?

Initially, the described symptom almost always is indicative of an internal hardware issue or more particularly, mechanical rather than electronic

Offhand and after a review of the repair/Service Manual, primary checks on likely suspects would be:

  • reel motor (least likely);
  • capstan motor (likely);
  • capstan belt (most likely).

Are you then considering a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair approach? Are you familiar with electronic components, have access to / comfortable in the use of a multimeter and perhaps even a soldering iron/hot-air station?

Please post back how you would want to approach this and/or should you need additional information.

Thanks for response. If the problem is capstan belt, I assume this could be replaced as DIY easily. Otherwise I would plobably be more comfortable having a service centre do the job.

Shown below is the exploded parts diagram to give you an idea of the assembly/dis-assembly requirements. The relevant parts are colored:

  • • green - reel motor P/N CA80008A;
  • • yellow - capstan motor P/N CA80010A; and
  • • red - capstan belt P/N 0C80034A.
