I'm installing a gas fireplace. looking at the installation

Customer Question

I'm installing a gas fireplace. looking at the installation manual, it requires a vent pipe that runs 2' above the roof, then another 8" of a cap. Can the 2' length be hidden in a wooden chase? I'm concerned that the chase is more flammable than the roofing tiles. Is the 2' required because of the heat or to provide adequate ventilation?

The 2 foot clearance is for a few things including adequate ventilation, flammability, and snow clearance.
