I am considering purchasing a duplex that was build in 1884.

Customer Question

I am considering purchasing a duplex that was build in 1884. The asking price is $132,000. For tax purposes it was assessed for $67,000 in 2014. The realtor has told me that to her knowledge, all of the original plumbing, pipes, HVAC are still in place. If I make an offer on this house, it will definitely be contingent on an inspection and appraisal first. What specific problems should I expect with such and old house including any issues with asbestos?

You aren't giving me much to go on. First, I doubt the original plumbing is still in place unless the place wasn't plumbed until the 1930's or later. Same with the HVAC. There was no HVAC until the late 1950's. Although there could be an original steam or hot water heating system which could have asbestos insulation. If you want a better evaluation I'd need a lot more info.

Ok, what info do you need?

I need specifics about the buildings mechanical systems. Pictures would work. You can post a picture here by clicking on the paper clip icon in the tool bar at the top of this dialogue box. You can only post from a PC or a Mac not a phone or a tablet. If that doesn’t work for you then you can upload a pic to a file sharing service like https://photos.google.com/ OR https://www.dropbox.com and post the “share”link to your picture here or you can email the pic to customer service but the last option can take quite a while to get to me.
