I accidentally cut a white cable beside the fence while planting

Resolved Question:

I accidentally cut a white cable beside the fence while planting a small grape tree. The hole is deep is 3 inches and the white cable comes out. what can I do to have a peace of mind. I check my cables, and internet and our lights was ok . I am not sure what is the white cable if it is a phone line. But I cut off my land phone after one year of moving in to this house.

AssuredElectrical :

Customer:

AssuredElectrical :

Customer:

Customer:

AssuredElectrical :

AssuredElectrical :

Customer:

it was buried very shallow

AssuredElectrical :

Is it the left or right white item? I cannot see them clearly enough?

AssuredElectrical :

click the image I posted

AssuredElectrical :

Is the cable round?

Customer:

yes it has 2 white cables

Customer:

and one was accidentally cut

AssuredElectrical :

but both cables are round?

AssuredElectrical :

can you look at the cut end that is open now? see what you see inside?

Customer:

you marked it right

AssuredElectrical :

are they both round?

Customer:

yes it

Customer:

can you see the other cable

Customer:

it has 2 cables

Customer:

give me one second

AssuredElectrical :

I see 2 white items running next to each other yes.

AssuredElectrical :

look at the end of the one you cut.

Customer:

seems like it is not an electric wire.

AssuredElectrical :

if they are round, it is probably coax cable for satellite or cable

Customer:

The one that's broken has a metal wire inside. The other one seems identical.

AssuredElectrical :

can you describe the metal wire? does it look like it has an outer braided metal covering?

AssuredElectrical :

with a copper wire inside the center?

Customer:

ok let me send this picture to you

AssuredElectrical :

Customer:

Customer:

ok that is the inside of the broken cable

AssuredElectrical :

that looks like the one I posted doesnt it?

AssuredElectrical :

when was the home built?

Customer:

2006

AssuredElectrical :

yea, that looks like an old coax cable to me in the picture

AssuredElectrical :

is it right next to the home?

Customer:

yes at the fence

Customer:

does it affect my cable?

Customer:

my cable is working

Customer:

I have my internet, cable and power

AssuredElectrical :

that is why I think it is leftover, maybe thrown in the ground during construction possibly

AssuredElectrical :

See it often, electricians, cable etc thrown outside and landscaped over with dirt

AssuredElectrical :

especially at 3" deep

AssuredElectrical :

try to pull it, it may pull right out of the ground

Customer:

yes but it has 2 cables parallel to each other

AssuredElectrical :

but both are round, correct?

Customer:

yes

AssuredElectrical :

ok, it isnt power

Customer:

I am thinking if it is an electrical it must be buried a little bit deeper than 3 inches deep

AssuredElectrical :

did someone have a dish in the yard at some point maybe?

AssuredElectrical :

electrical is supposed to be18- 24" deep

AssuredElectrical :

and it isnt round

AssuredElectrical :

it is flat

Customer:

yes actually the fence is close to old dish

Customer:

The previous owner has a dish network

AssuredElectrical :

that may have been the coax from an old dish possibly. I would pull on it myself.

AssuredElectrical :

probably pull right up

Customer:

I am scared I thought it is an electric wire

AssuredElectrical :

if you have cable, then there should not be an issue, but the cable would have to go somewhere and if there is nothing in the yard, well, must be obsolete

AssuredElectrical :

electric cables are flat

Customer:

My main concern is 3 inches is too shallow for electrical wire . But I think you are right

AssuredElectrical :

yes, way too shallow for electric. even if it were for low voltage lights, it would be flat cables, not round

Customer:

ok so is that the standard for electrical cables that it should be flat?

AssuredElectrical :

yes

AssuredElectrical :

standard voltage and 12 volts are flat

Customer:

ok so I have nothing to worry then.

AssuredElectrical :

I think you are fine

AssuredElectrical :

at 3" tug it out of the ground and see how far it pulls up.

AssuredElectrical :

I always do that out of curiosity, lol

Customer:

Ok

Customer:

yes because when I am digging for my plants I can feel that I can pull it off from the ground

Customer:

pull it up

Customer:

so I stop

AssuredElectrical :

yea, probably an old dish cable or still could be some scrap pieces, never know

Customer:

Ok does it has 2 cable parallel to each other?

AssuredElectrical :

But they are both round, dishes can have up to 4 cables , mine has 3

AssuredElectrical :

2 streams and one for the HD satallite

Customer:

ok

Customer:

but the main thing is it is both round so we are positive that it is not electrical cable.

Customer:

my cable is working properly

Customer:

does it affect later on incase that is my cable?

AssuredElectrical :

If it was electrical, it would have several wires on the inside of it and each one would have its own insulation and the cable would be flat

AssuredElectrical :

If it went to yours, it would be out now.

Customer:

ok

AssuredElectrical :

is your power company over head attaching to the house?

Customer:

no because I don't see a wire. I think it is all buried underground

Customer:

The house was built 2006

AssuredElectrical :

ok, some areas are overhead and some underground

Customer:

ok

AssuredElectrical :

I was just going to have you look for the cable company post somewhere on that side

Customer:

but here in our subdivision is overhead

AssuredElectrical :

ok

AssuredElectrical :

look at the side of the house where the electrical cable comes from the street, you will probably see a phone cable, and cable company cable also attaching to the house.

Customer:

yes it is

AssuredElectrical :

all your utilities are overhead, so someone had a dish in the yard most likely

Customer:

All my utilities cable are close to that area

Customer:

and its not overhead

Customer:

it is underground

AssuredElectrical :

ok, if iot was yours and operating, you would not have anything right now. It would also have been deep in the ground, not 3" deep

Customer:

But I think you answer my question

AssuredElectrical :

Only satellite dishes put the cable right at the ground level

Customer:

Ok thank you

AssuredElectrical :

you are welcome, glad to help out. Best to be safe, thanks

Customer:

Ok thanks

AssuredElectrical :

your welcome
