I have an old iron fence (18 feet) on the front of my porch that is rusty-to replace it with other options is close to $2000. Was thinking of getting a pro to scrape it down and refinsh it. Looking for advice, what to expect, things to ask, how long will it last, etc.thanks
Good afternoon. My name's Kel. In this case the question I'd ask is, "Does the fence have historical or architectural value?" If not I'd replace it. Once rust sets into metal it's virtually impossible to preclude it reforming in a number of years. Even the best technique is going to see rust spots forming in three to four years. If it does have value and you want to restore it the painter will have to use Lead Safe Protocols to prep it. Mostly that requires putting poly down to collect the chips and dust and cordon off the work area. Thoroughly scrape and sand. Install a rust converter then a primer then two coats of finish. You add years to the paint job if your gently sand any rust blooms with 220 grit paper then touch up. Does this make sense?
Thanks-good point-will replace with a vinyl fence
