I am trying to purchase reusable/washable filters for the air returns. I have been unsuccessful. I've tried, Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, TrueValue locally and performed online searches. The company that installed the furnace did not help either. The sizes needed are 14x14x1, 20x20x1, and 12x12x1. Is there a supplier that anyone recommends?
The problem your running into is normally "return" air registers to not have a filter. Further, since return air is not "forced" air and simply gravity fed a filter would be somewhat restrictive in allowing a proper flow of return air. The filter on the furnace deals with this air and forces it through that filter with the furnace fan.

If I am understanding your answer, are you saying that I don't need filters for the air returns? And if your answer is yes, then why were non-reusable filters installed in the first place?
One of two things... Either these are not air "returns." Or a prior owner of the home thought there should be filters there and was wrong. And yes I am saying you don't need filters in those locations. (If they are return air)
PS... If those sizes you mentioned were supposed to be filters I'm sure of all the stores you also mentioned someplace would have had them for sale...
I am certain that the items described are air returns. The filters described were installed by the HVAC contractor. If the sales personnel indicate that they don't carry reusable/washable filters for air returns, then I believe them.Thank you very much for attempting to answer my question.
I just can't let go of this "mystery." Would you mind contacting the HVAC contracting company and then let me know what they say. My question(s) would be how can you have installed a product that you can't repair for me? And can you tell me how to contact the manufacturer directly so I can get an answer as to what should I do regarding obtaining this product or a replacement product designed to do what this one does.? And by the way, what does this filter do and do I really need it?
Thank you in advance, Will... this would be very helpful to me... Dennis

I will contact the HVAC contractor again. My own answer to your question is that my experience with this particular contractor is that they are not customer(owner) service focused and problem resolution focused. The furnace was manufactured by American Standard, and it's called Freedom 95 Comort-R, Model# XXXXXThis is their preferred contact method: http://www.americanstandardair.com/siteinfo/ContactUs.aspx
