What are the Minneapolis, MN building codes/requirements ...

Customer Question

What are the Minneapolis, MN building codes/requirements for indoor stair railings... height, width, width between spindles, etc? There are more than 5 steps.

Welcome to Just Answer.

The stair railing is required to be between 32-34 inches high, measured from the tips of the stair tread nosings. 36 inches high on any landings/ horizontal surfaces. 36 inches clear between railings.

You cannot allow a 4 inch sphere to pass thru any of the openings, including vertical or horizontal spindles/ ballusters. So space them out, so that there is less than 4 inches between spindles or posts. This includes the triangular space between each stair and the bottom rail of the stair railing.
