How do i pick a skeleton key lock

Customer Question

My mom has a old chest she really wants to open... but the kids lost the skeloton key... the lock looks like a circle with a square under it... like those "key holes" in the movies. Is there any way to open it with damaging the lock or chest?

Many times a piece of wire bent, will open these
locks. This is called a "Button Hook" pick, and can be easily made from a stiff coat hanger.
it's in the shape of a L and has a small hook on the end.
sometimes (assuming the keyway is large enough) you can stick
your little finger into the lock to throw the bolt!
