Customer Question

I had what I considered a possible exposure 14 weeks ago. I was tested at week 5 with a gen 3 test(negative) at 9 weeks my doctor gave me a Celestone injection for my allergies. Since then I have had 4th generation tests at week 11, 12 and 13 (all negative) would the Celestone shot at week 9 cause a false negative or are my results conclusive

What did you have exposure too?

HIV

The 4th generation test for HIV are almost 100% sensitive and specific for diagnostic purposes. The next step to make sure there is no HIV would be to have an HIV RNA testing. Therefore, if you are very concerned, you should express that to your physician who ordered the test so you can have an HIV RNA test which will confirm your results.

I had an RNA test at 10 weeks which was negative. My question is would the Celestone(Steriod) injection at week 9 effect my test results at week 13... could it cause a false negative?

Let me review the research.

Expert:  Dr. Scott replied 7 months ago.

The research do not show what can cause false negative. In the testing trial, there were 86, 836 patients that were all exposed to HIV and screened with 4th generation tests. Those who tested negative, were all screened with HIV RNA testing. Only 134 patients were found to have false negatives which were all picked up by HIV RNA testing. Therefore, you should be in the clear based on this research.
