Customer Question

Hi Im a family physician. My patient is a high school student who was assaulted last week. She was given one week of PEP and told to follow up with ID. When she called ID they told her to call me.
JA: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?
Customer: My patient is on PEP from the ER
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: Hello are you a real person?
JA: I'm an assistant to the HIV Doctor. I work with them to help customers like you.
Customer: right.

I understand your concern.

One week of PEP is standard protocol

Were there any labs sent? any results available?

Customer: replied 18 days ago.
labs were sent but not back yet. She will be out of meds tomorrow and no results to go by. ID punted. Can't find clear guidelines online. No info on HIV status of assailant.

ER protocol is to do a set of cultures and swabs. Have you obtained the ER records? Did the patient refuse an exam? Unfortunately if you have nothing to go by, I think it is reasonable to send off for everything. HIV, HCV, HBV, etc.
