cat 3118 overheating on uphill pulls, even at low speeds. water pump belt new & tight. new temperature sender. fan clutch seems to work. temp needle went to red, but coolant reservoir did not boil over when pressure cap was removed. very slow to cool down at no load idle.

I pulled over when check gauge alarm went off. Temp was at low end of red. Digital thermometer indicated 190 at reservoir and block at over 212. Have not checked radiator for cold spots and have not tested thermostat. Is thermostat under top hose housing like a car? I just started it & let it idle for 35 minutes. It got to 140 degrees.
Yes. If you follow the top hose to the engine, it will lead you to the thermostat. I would suggest replacing it next since the water pump belt is tight.Let me know if you need more help.
