Bill, Hi this is JC aging, on 06' Volvo allison 4500 tranny, would it be possible to get coolent in the fluid w/out geting fluid in the coolent? The feed lot i'v been doing some work for, had this truck stop in its tracks, and went to neutral, I never did get out of neutral. the codes i got from this unit. was oL-70, d14627, d21412, d3, d4, d5. they also told me that the frist thing they tried was to wiggal the harness at the trans. and it went back to worken for about 30 minutes. What does this sound like to you?

The possibility of the coolant in fluid but no fluid in the coolant is unlikely, the lower pressure in the cooling system pushing fluid into the transmission cooler when the engine is shut off and transmission main pressure and cooler flow drops, is less than the cooler out pressure. Most likely water from a missing or loose dipstick. The code 14-12 relates to oil level sensor fails low out of range, and can be caused by a very low fluid level, the HD transmission can run very low on fluid and set codes and shift poorly due to the low level. "The record in our shop was a dump truck that was driven in low 5 gallons of fluid low, barley moving at all". The code that has me worried is the code 46-27 ,this is almost always caused by a failed high side driver in the ECU itself, they need to swap an ECU from a sister truck in to be sure, but a bad ECU is most likely the cause of the no range condition. Thanks for requesting me!Bill
Bill, I know you probably wont read this till after 5 or 6. I had the same theory on the fluid, and explained it to the feedlot-manager, the thing is, I couldnt pin point the problem to ether ECU or trans.and they took the truck to a BIG truck shop.they are selling him a new trans. and told him the coolant in the system shorted all the solenoids, apparently the coolant got in from the back side where some coolant flows? I dont know what they are talking about, when i questioned why there wasnt trans. fluid in the radiator, If trans. pressure is alot higher then the coolant, he got alittle short with me. Plus we check the fluid, it was clean and was at the bottom of the full mark. The 46-27 code goes along with the (CHECK TRANS. ECU ) dash notice it had. I told the feedlot-manger that was more then likely there problem. Again this unit never showed any sings of low fluid, it ran good and just stop on a dime. I dont expect you to tell me what i need to do, they already committed to that shop, but i really appreciate you opinion.
Thank You ... JC
There is an integral cooler available on some HD models that can leak and cause coolant to enter the transmission, However the coolant usually causes other codes related to shorts and will effect more than just the solenoids driven by the A solenoid driver in the ECU. The code they have is for over current to just the A driver solenoids. If there truly is coolant in the fluid then a complete change out of all frictions and solenoids would be necessary. The truth will be known if they come back to the customer and tell him that the ECU was also bad, they wont do this until they have overhauled the transmission and the 46 cod is still active. Ask them to send a fluid sample to have it tested,if you feel the fluid did not look like it was contaminated. Remember synthetic TranSynd looks tan when water contaminates it.Bill
Thank You, XXXXX XXXXX remember the fluids color was not red, but they run all there trucks with a hydraulic fluid. It looked clean and wasnt milky at all. they did clam to have sent a sample to have tested. I wished I would have taught to change out ECU w/ a sister truck before they sent it out. So if the ECU was bad, that could have been all the problem, and it will still be there after the new trans. I will find out in the next day or two.
Thanks aging, JC
The newer trucks that use TranSynd synthetic fluid tend to have a gold color after they run a while, "that is normal". And yes if the ECU is bad they will either switch a used one in to cover up the rebuild, or may say it also is bad. Like I said before, "I'm not saying the ECU must be bad,but it is the probable cause. Especially if the fluid did not look contaminated to you.Bill

Bill, Im sorry I showed a payment on by card account to ebay, and thuoght I had already accepted your answer. Thanks aging for your help.
