Customer Question

I have a 1997 Volvo Wia w/ a 430/470 detroit. The truck has been sitting for a year and because I couldn't afford to buy batteries, it was never started. I want to put it back on the road, so put 4 new batteries to get it started . It had fuel in it and the filters were not sucking the fuel out of them. I figured that it has probably lost its prime. My mechanic suggested to try and prime it by starting it on ether--It cranked enough to build air on the ether, but will not fire off and start. He said keep using ether and let it run a bit of a time and that would work the air out. The oil pressure gauge is showing no oil pressure--all fluids were topped off. Mike seems to think with no oil pressure do to a bad sensor telling the eigine it has no oil is the reason it won't start and run. I say it still needs primed with fuel--The filter only loses a bit of fuel--it is not sucking it dry. I think it still has air in the fuel system. Any suggestions ore ideas? Please use X-XXXXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX--that is my primary Thanks

Hello and welcome to Just Answer, I'll try and give you a hand with this, the first thing I would check is to make sure that all your battery connections are hooked up, there is a power lead for the ECM at the batteries, if there is no power or ground connection the ECM won't turn on. Next, for the lost prime issue, don't use ether, instead use WD-40 with a misting tip, remove intake pipe and mist it in to intake like you would with ether, it won't dry out the cylinders, the other thing you can do is have someone apply air pressure to the fuel tank while your cranking engine over, it should fire up, let me know how you make out, if you need more help just post back, and if your good just hit accept. Thanks for using JA.

If the ECM isn't turning on, would the truck run on the ether shots? And where is the air intake pipe--He was shooting it into the air cleaner. Also, I thought about this after I sent my question--Mike had tried to pull start the truck last fall with the old batteries still in it. Would the ECM thing have caused it not to fire off when pulled. The truck was running and working before I had to park it because of the economy. It had been running fine up to that point

Hi there, when he pull started it, did it run? Yes it will fire and run until the ether is all gone, the other thing that came to mind, if you have a test light, turn the key on and check for power at the terminal on the shut off solenoid, sometimes you can get a build up of corrosion between the wire end and terminal nut and it won't start then. If you do have power, the other thing that can happen is the steel disc inside the shut off can stick shut, you can remove the 4 small allen screws and check it, be careful, there is a small spring that can fly out, other then that its pretty basic. Check it out and let me know.

They worked all day on the silly thing--When he pulled it , it did not start. Mike talked to our mechanic and he has agreed to bring his computer and try and get it diagonised tomorrow. I just didn't want to have to get it towed. I appreciate your help-Thanks
