Im setting the overhead on a 1999 series 60 detroit diesel,

Im setting the overhead on a 1999 series 60 detroit diesel, according to the valve cover the injector sets at 80.3mm, the intake valves at .008 and the exhaust valves at .026, i've done all this no problem, then i installed the jake brake, model 765a, it's stamped on the tag to set at .023, this confuses me, after setting it to .023 it lessens the exhaust valve clearance to .023, how can this be right?

You are correct on lash settings. When you set the jakes to .023 you should still have .026 between the valve stem and the exhaust valve. You should have .023 on top of exhaust valve adjuster on the flat spot and jake cylinder. I hope this is helps you out. If you have anymore questions, or info just ask.

You say I should have my .026 between the valve stem and the adjuster but I dont because the top of the adjuster contacts the bottom of the jake surface first, it's seems to me that the only way to maintain .026 at the valve is to set the jake at .026 or greater, this is what a Cummins engine does, the valve sets at .027 and the jake at.030, this makes sense to me. In summary, I have .026 valve clearance without the jake assembly installed, after I install the jake and set it to .023, I can only get a .023 feeler gauge at the valve. Thanks.

My problem is that when I recheck my valve clearance I dont have .026 because the top of the valve adjuster contacts the bottom of the jake surface because it is set at .023, on a Cummins engine for example, the valve sets at .027 and the jake sets at .030, this makes sense to be. Thanks for the accept,no need to accept again.It will still take the same amount of movement of the rockerarm to open the valve.Let me verify settings of jakes. What is your engine serial number and the model number on jakes.

No need to click accept again. Sorry for having to wait on me. I checked and those are the correct settings. I know what you are saying about the lash. I have never thought about it that way, i have set many that way, but never checked the valve clearance after i set the brake. I would assume it still would be correct, because the rocker arm will still have to turn the same amount to open valve with or without jake. The lash will be tighter due to jake piston but it still will open at the same time and the same amount of clearance.I hope this helps you out. I am also posting the specs on the jakes and valves.
