The DSM-5 (published by the American Psychiatris Association in 2013) classifies 8 eating and feeding disorders: 1) anorexia nervosa (AN), 2) bulimia nervosa (BN), 3) binge-eating disorder (BED), 4) avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), 5) pica, 6) rumination disorder, 7) other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED), and 8) unspecified feeding or eating disorder (UFED).
ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder) is an eating disorder characterized by limiting certain foods or food groups based on the food's appearance, smell, texture, appearance, a past negative experience with the food, and sometimes for no discernible reason. ARFID sometimes occurs with anxiety disorders and in children with a diagnosis of autism. ARFID is treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy and occasionally with hypnosis.
