Customer Question

My mom is recovering from back surgery on 9/13 and while she is improving, 2-4 hours each night are very difficult due to nerve pain and spasms that don't occur in the daytime. We're on gabapentin and muscle relaxers but am looking for suggestions. Next doctor's apt is in six days.
JA: Have you had any recent injuries? What seems to make the pain better or worse?
Customer: Only the back surgery on 9/13 which was extensive (9+ hours and they added ten screws to the lower back to help alignment). Nighttime makes it worse.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: Diabetic, this is her 4th back surgery in her life, and that she's 80 and otherwise is very good health.

Following treatment is recommended;

1) Medications like Tegretol, Pregabalin, Gabapentin (which she is already taking)

2) Topical therapy with capsaicin or lidocaine patches

3) Acupuncture

4) Alpha-lipoic acid; it has antioxidant properties as well as relieve the nerve pain.

5) Trans cutaneous electrical stimulation; the device is available at health stores and pharmacies. This is one of the best treatment as it avoids the adverse effects of medications.
