Customer Question

Lower back pain on my left near waist
JA: Have you had any recent injuries? What seems to make the pain better or worse?
Customer: No injuries but I have breast cancer and will be having a lympetomy next week. I'm using a heating pad and have taken aleve for the pain. When I try to stand its a sharp pain.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: I am 73 years; have high blood pressure but its managed with Lisinopril. Am also taking a statin drug, plus a diuretic.

Hello and thanks for trusting me to help you. I am a board certified consultant with over 30 years of experience.

Well persistent sharp pain shouldn't be ignored as you had already tried Advil and heating pad.

X-Ray/MRI of Lumbo-Sacral Spine may be done to rule out lumbar radiculopathy/prolapsed disc.

Ultrasound of whole abdomen to rule out kidney stone.

Urine complete examination to rule out urinary tract infection.

But since the pain is sharp on standing it is most likely due to pinched nerve.

You should hydrate yourself with plenty of fluids.

Also your doctor may prescribe you strong pain killers orally or injections.

I would recommend to see your doctor or visit ER ASAP.

I hope this helps.

I'm concerned about kidney failure because creatine level is low at 55 but I drink alot of coffee so will drink more water. I have surgery next week for cancer and will discuss asap with my doctor. Thank you!

Thanks for the follow-up.

Yes maintain a good hydration.

Also if possible monitor your blood pressure.

Sharp pain itself doesn't confirm kidney failure.

if your Urea/BUN is high and you have swelling on legs, urine retention then visit ER or see your doctor ASAP.

Hope this helps.
